St. Louis Challenges Law Enabling State Takeover of Local Police

A recently enacted Missouri law putting the St. Louis police department under state control should be invalidated by a district court, according to a new lawsuit the city filed Monday.

St. Louis and its Board of Alderman President Megan Green asked the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in a complaint to declare House Bill 495, also known as the “state takeover law,” invalid. Green alleges the law violates her First Amendment right as well as her freedom of expression protections under the Missouri Constitution.
