Texas School Choice Fund Draws Challenge Over Muslim Exclusion

Texas’ new school choice program unfairly leaves out children attending Islamic religious schools, a Muslim lawyer said in the first challenge to the state’s new plan to divert public money to private education.

The federal lawsuit from Mehdi Cherkaoui of Houston escalates heated legal tensions between the state’s GOP leadership and Muslims living in Texas.

Cherkaoui’s two children attend a private Islamic school that he says is excluded from the religiously neutral program because it has hosted events by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which Gov. Abbott (R) designated a foreign terrorist organization.
