The Trump administration is targeting California laws requiring certain space accommodations for egg-laying hens, saying the rules veer unlawfully into egg regulation efforts and are driving up consumer prices.
“It is the prerogative of the federal government alone to regulate the quality, inspection, and packaging of eggs,” the Justice Department alleged in a lawsuit Wednesday, declaring its authority under the 1970 Egg Products Inspection Act.
California has contributed to a historic rise in egg prices “by imposing unnecessary red tape,” the suit says.
