Utah Judge Rejects Redrawn Congressional Map in Blow to GOP (1)

The GOP-controlled Utah legislature must adopt a redrawn congressional map proposed by a coalition of voting rights groups who asserted recently approved district lines unlawfully favor Republican voters, a Utah state judge ruled.

The congressional boundaries approved by the legislature last month don’t comply with redistricting standards prohibiting partisan gerrymandering that were enacted under a 2018 ballot measure, Judge Dianna M. Gibson of the Utah Third Judicial District Court said in an opinion issued late Monday. The plaintiffs are likely to succeed on their claim that the map is unconstitutional, she said.
