Virginia Democrats’ Redistricting Play Heads to Voter Referendum

Virginia voters will decide in the spring whether to allow the Democratic legislature to redraw the commonwealth’s congressional districts ahead of the November midterm elections.

Democratic lawmakers on Friday gave final approval to a proposed state constitutional amendment that would authorize mid-decade redistricting. The state Senate voted 21-18 along party lines for the amendment, sending it to a referendum election that could attract millions of dollars in television advertising.

California Democrats last November enacted new congressional lines through Proposition 50, which drew more than $250 million in spending.
