A New York judge denied BNP Paribas SA’s request to throw out a $20.75 million verdict against the bank for funding a regime that committed widespread human rights abuses in Sudan.
In a hearing Wednesday, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled in favor of three former Sudanese refugees who are now in the US, rejecting arguments by the bank that the verdict was unreasonable and shouldn’t be allowed to stand.
Hellerstein ruled that the bank failed to show that the jury verdict was a “serious erroneous result” or “miscarriage of justice,” the legal standard for setting it aside.
