NY Gov. Hochul Vetoes Bill With Health-Data Privacy Restrictions

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul rejected legislation on Friday that would have strengthened privacy protections for people seeking abortions and gender-affirming care.

The bill (S.B. 929) would have applied to entities that handle the health data of anyone physically present within the state. Businesses would have had to wait at least 24 hours to request a consumer’s consent to collect their health information, including their locations tracked.

Hochul, who campaigned on abortion rights, didn’t act on the measure for months after it cleared the Legislature in January.
