Arizona voters will decide in November whether to make crossing the border illegally a state crime under a measure state lawmakers approved Tuesday.
The Republican-backed Secure the Border Act (H.C.R. 2060) will bypass action by Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) to go straight to the ballot. With voter approval, state and local law enforcement with probable cause would have the power to arrest non-US citizens crossing from Mexico into Arizona outside ports of entry.
