BGOV OnPoint: Emergency Bridge Funding Scrutinized by Congress

Lawmakers are weighing a Biden administration request for nearly $4 billion to rebuild Baltimore’s collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge and pay for other disaster recovery efforts.

While there’s bipartisan support in Congress to help rebuild the bridge, some Republicans oppose President Joe Biden’s pledge to have the federal government pay 100% of the replacement costs. Others have said the spending must be offset, including by seeking funds from the operator of the ship that crashed into the bridge.
