California Privacy Agency Fines Marketing Firm Under Broker Law

A Nevada-based marketing firm will have to pay $56,600 for failing to register as a data broker, CalPrivacy announced Wednesday.

ROR Partners, which caters to fitness and wellness brands, uses data from 262 million Americans to build consumer profiles and audience lists for which other companies use to target advertising, the agency alleged. That data can be used to draw inferences about people’s behavior. The agency, officially known as the California Privacy Protection Agency, recently underwent a rebranding.

ROR Partners didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
