Louisiana officials say the state’s congressional primaries won’t happen as scheduled next month after the US Supreme Court struck down the state’s map. Early voting in the May 16 election was to begin Saturday.

Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill, both Republicans, said in a joint statement that yesterday’s ruling by the high court — that a majority-Black district was an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander”effectively prohibits the state from carrying out primaries using the current districts.
