New push for private web browsing in California

CALIFORNIA LAWMAKERS are trying again to make it easier for state residents to block the sale of sharing of data about websites they visit.

  • A bill approved by a state Assembly committee would be the first to mandate opt-out options for browers such as Google’s Chrome. Tech businesses opposing the measure make significant revenue from advertising that uses user data to target displays.
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed a similar measure last year, saying implementation on mobile device browsers would be unprecedented and burdensome.
