Newsom signs AI watermark, affordable housing bills

CALIFORNIA NOW BOASTS the nation’s most extensive law on watermarking content AI-generated content after Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed the California AI Transparency Act, Thursday. The law’s requirements start in 2026.

  • The measure requires large generative AI companies like OpenAI to disclose content produced with their products. This could take the form of an explicit label noting an image is AI-generated. Companies must also offer a publicly available tool that indicates if a piece of work was created by that provider’s AI technology.
