Polis Warns of Taxpayer Costs If IRS’ Direct File Tool Lapses

Taxpayers will face a more cumbersome filing season if the Trump administration follows through with suspending the IRS’s Direct File tool, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) warned in a letter Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Polis announced last year Coloradans would be able to participate in the free program starting in the 2026 tax season so taxpayers in the state could file their federal tax returns directly with the IRS while also completing their state returns. Coloradans can already use the state’s own online tool to file their state income taxes for free.
