South Carolina Online Safety Law Draws Tech Ire: States of Play

Tech companies are already pushing back against a South Carolina law enacted this week that will require them to offer new safety features to protect minors or face financial damages, Tonya Riley reports.

  • H. 3431, signed by Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, requires that companies let users disable addictive features like infinite scroll and auto-playing videos, as well as location visibility. It affects online services that do business in South Carolina and are “reasonably likely” to be accessed by minors.
