States say ‘no thanks’ to Trump’s US parks offer

STATE DON’T WANT PARKS, at least not the national monuments, historical parks, battlefields, and protected areas the Trump administration wants to shift to states to handle. The US would only hold onto the 63 sites with “national park” in their name under a new proposal.

  • States aren’t fans of the idea because facilities designated as National Park System sites see increased tourist traffic, boosting the local economies. Even some Republicans in Congress who are eager to see other federal lands developed or taken over aren’t necessarily excited about breaking up the national park system.
