Utah lawmakers attempted to shore up the state’s first-in-the-nation teen social media restrictions against legal challenges through two measures now headed to Gov. Spencer Cox (R).
The bills passed before the end of the legislative session Friday and come as federal judges have blocked implementation of similar laws in Arkansas and Ohio in addition to a different approach to regulating kids online in California.
The measures were triggered as Utah faces two lawsuits against social media regulations enacted into law in 2023—but not yet implemented—that require parental consent for youth under 18 to operate accounts, among other limits.
