Virginia Democrats Aim to Redistrict: States of Play

VIRGINIA LAWMAKERS are looking to redraw the state’s congressional maps as Democrats seek to counter similar moves by Republicans to win a House majority in the 2026 midterms.

  • Democratic leaders in Virginia’s legislature are planning to introduce a constitutional amendment that would allow for an exception to the state’s 10-year redistricting requirements. Democrats currently hold six of Virginia’s 11 congressional seats.
  • The General Assembly would need to approve the constitutional amendment twice, including once before the House of Delegates election next month and once after. The amendment would then have to be adopted in a referendum by voters.
