Washington Millionaire Tax Sees First Suit

Washington state’s new income tax on high earners met its first lawsuit alleging it’s an illegal tax on property, Perry Cooper and Casey Murray report.

The 9.9% levy on taxpayers who make more than $1 million a year “has to be uniform and no higher than 1%" under a series of state Supreme Court rulings, said former Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna. Now a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, he filed suit on behalf of affected citizens and business groups.
