US Issues Orders to Keep New England, Texas Grids Stable

US Department of Energy today issued two emergency orders to mitigate blackouts in New England and Texas during Winter Storm Fern, according to emailed statement from the department.

  • Orders authorize ISO New England and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to run specified resources located within the two regions, regardless of limits established by environmental permits or state law
    • ISO-NE order is in effect from Jan. 25-31
    • ERCOT order is in effect from Jan. 25-27
  • This is the second emergency order issued to ERCOT during Winter Storm Fern
    • An order was issued yesterday to leverage backup generation at data centers ...
