State legislatures across the US are moving to implement parts of Republicans’ sweeping bill to overhaul voting requirements ahead of the 2026 midterms, as the bill’s prospects dim in Congress.

Congressional Republicans are under pressure from President Donald Trump to pass the bill, known as the “SAVE America Act,” which would require documentary proof of citizenship during registration and photo identification to vote in federal elections.
