The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has approved more than 1,000 applications from employees seeking early retirements or buyouts, sources have confirmed.
Eligible NOAA employees had until April 17 to decide whether to accept the voluntary separation or early retirement packages. The Commerce Department is eyeing slashing 1,029 NOAA workers through reductions-in-force this spring. It’s not clear if the buyouts and early retirements will enable the agency, which already has lost hundreds of employees to layoffs, to avoid further reductions in force, or RIFs.
