Draft Surface Transportation Measure Unveiled by House Panel (1)

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Sunday released draft language for a five-year surface transportation reauthorization addressing highways, transit systems, and other infrastructure nationwide.

A new fee on electric vehicles, rail safety proposals, and potential regulations on autonomous vehicles are among the most contentious issues the draft bill addresses.

The committee plans to formally consider the measure May 21. Chair Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.), the ranking member on the committee, have agreed on $580 billion in new spending compared to the $550 billion authorized by the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law that expires Sept. 30.
