GOP Approves Farm Spending in Tax Bill Despite Uncertain Future

House Agriculture Republicans voted Wednesday night to advance farm policies as part of the party’s sweeping tax and spending plan, though the legislation faces headwinds in the Senate and among some moderate Republicans.

GOP members voted for a plan that injects about $59 billion into the Agriculture Department’s budget for crop supports, trade promotion, and animal disease. The proposal also includes about $300 billion in massive cuts drawn from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the nation’s primary low-income food assistance program.

Republicans are trying to pass the measure this summer through the reconciliation budget process, which doesn’t require Democratic support. ...
