Homeland Security Gavel Race Takes Shape as Members Make Pitches

Border hawks and cybersecurity wonks are in the mix to lead the Homeland Security Committee after the impending retirement of Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.).

Republican Reps. Clay Higgins (La.), Carlos Giménez (Fla.), and Andrew Garbarino (N.Y.) told Bloomberg Government on Wednesday they are seeking the role, while Rep. Michael Guest (Miss.) said he’s seriously considering it.

Each contender would bring a different background to the position.

Higgins, who’s previously sought the gavel, is an intense border hawk, reserve law enforcement officer, and former head of Homeland’s Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee. He’s landed in hot water for offensive comments online ...
