A top Pentagon official told lawmakers last week that the Defense Department will need $80 billion in emergency funding to cover the cost of the war with Iran, according to two congressional aides.
The White House hasn’t formally sent Congress a request for supplemental appropriations for the current fiscal year. But Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg, the second-highest-ranking civilian overseeing the military, previewed the long-awaited ask to key members that would need to sign off on the extra money.
Senior appropriators have said they anticipate the Trump administration will soon transmit that emergency spending request.
