Senate Kicks Off Prolonged Debate on Long-Shot Voter ID Bill

Senators have kicked off a lengthy debate over President Donald Trump‘s top legislative priority ahead of the midterm elections, but it’s unlikely to garner enough support to ultimately succeed.

The Senate narrowly voted 51-48 on Tuesday to begin consideration of partisan voter ID legislation (S. 1383; BGOV Bill Analysis), dubbed the SAVE America Act, that would require proof of citizenship through documentation such as a personal ID, passport, or driver’s license to participate in elections. All Democrats voted against moving forward and one Republican joined them.
