Tech Turns Heat on NY Gov. Hochul to Veto AI Procurement Curbs

The tech industry is stepping up efforts to persuade New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to veto legislation that would restrict how state agencies use artificial intelligence for purposes such as social services and law enforcement, according to a previously unreported memo.

New York’s rules for automated systems would be among the most robust of any state if the Democratic governor signs the Loading Act into law. Labor groups including the AFL-CIO and the Civil Service Employees Association, which represents state workers, support the measure (S7543B). The Legislature passed it in June.
