The GOP-controlled House appropriations panel cleared legislation slashing Education Department funding by 10% over Democrats’ objections that low-income students will suffer from cuts to work-study and other programs.
The legislation funds the agency at $70.7 billion for fiscal year 2027, which starts in October. The White House—which is seeking to eliminate the department entirely—sought a more modest trim of 3%.
The committee voted 34 to 28 to move the bill, part of a large domestic funding package, to the House floor.
